Torah Treasure Hunt - Rabbi Eliana [for children 6-12]
Shavu'ot commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. The giving, but not the receiving. As Jews, receiving the Torah and hunting for meaning in its words is an ongoing goal. Come celebrate Shavu'ot with a scavenger hunt of fun and learning.
Restorative Yoga - Nancy Bernhard and Stefanie London [for all ages]
We will welcome the holiday with a gentle practice of breathing, postures, and meditation designed for relaxation and rest. For all ages and experience levels, including beginners and those who think they couldn't possibly. Please bring yoga mat if you have one, and wear nonrestrictive clothing. Any questions? Contact Nancy at [email protected]. Nancy and Stefanie both have longtime yoga practices, and teach at Be in Union Yoga in Somerville.
Ruth and Social Justice – Jonathan Reich [for adults]
Come and learn from the book of Ruth! Ruth can be read as a narrative about social justice and the institutions which the Torah puts in place to help immigrants. We will look at the book through this lens, as well as some of the ramifications of these teachings. Bonus: we will uncover the secret connection between the book of Ruth and Horatio Alger! No prior knowledge required, although giving Ruth a quick read might be helpful.
Jonathan Reich spent far too long in graduate school learning Hebrew Bible. He is a member of TBB. He lives in Somerville with his wife Stefanie London, and their two parrots, Iggy and Sparky.
Jews and Hollywood – Daniel M. Kimmel [for adults and teens]
In this class Daniel M. Kimmel will provide a history of Jews and the movies, from the moguls like Louis B. Mayer, Harry Cohn, Samuel Goldwyn, and the Warner Brothers, who helped found Hollywood, to contemporary filmmakers like Stephen Spielberg and Judd Apatow. This talk covers the changing way Jews have been portrayed on screen. Dan is a member of TBB, a veteran film critic, and the author of several works of fiction and non-fiction. His latest is the comic novel Father of the Bride of Frankenstein.
